GoatOps
Environmentally Friendly OpsBefore HybridOps existed, there was GoatOps — a fully sustainable, grass‑powered, highly distributed platform.
It didn't last long.
Incident #G-001
Unplanned fibre uplink decommission
Root cause
Primary goat (G-01 "Bash") breached containment and performed an unauthorised cable inspection on the main fibre uplink, causing a full-site outage.
Impact
- Loss of HA (Herd Availability)
- Unplanned goat migration (UGM)
- Severe degradation of grass throughput
- Route flapping (goats flapped everywhere)
- SLA dropped to 0%
Mitigation
- Deploy redundant fencing clusters (RFC)
- Implement Goat-Access-Control Lists (GACL)
- Enable chew-prevention policies
- Monitor goats via PromeBAATheus
Status
Resolved. Goat satisfied with snack.
Lessons learned
- Zero-Trust Grazing Architecture is mandatory
- Goats do not respect maintenance windows
- Redundant fencing clusters should have been day-one
- Single uplink is never acceptable — not even on a farm
GoatOps ultimately laid the foundation for a passion for resilient, fault-tolerant systems — and better cabling discipline.
